AGEIST Podcast with David Stewart | Ep. 304
Caroline Alan spent years hearing from practitioners that her exhaustion, insomnia, and inflammation were simply part of getting older, until a cup of dark liquid from her future business partner led her to ask whether aging and depletion might be the same thing.
In this conversation, the co-founder and CEO of BEAM Minerals and author of The Mineral Reset explains why she believes generations of farming have left soil unable to return minerals to our food, and why humic and fulvic minerals, which come from decomposed ancient rainforests, work in a way a shelf of eighteen separate pills cannot. She also lays out how minerals fuel the mitochondria in every cell, why their number and activity decline with age, and why she considers mineral balance as important as quantity. Listeners will hear her timeline for when people tend to notice changes in energy, recovery, and sleep, along with the symptoms she says are easy to overlook.
Caroline Alan and the Case for Treating the Body Like a Forest
Before she began taking minerals, Caroline Alan says she managed her health the way many people manage a car, sending each failing part to a different expert. She saw many practitioners for her gut, adrenals, sinuses, and gums, and the only mineral anyone mentioned was zinc. After two months of taking a liquid mineral supplement daily, she reports, her dentist, who had been cleaning her teeth four times a year because of periodontal disease, found no bleeding and tissue that looked pink and healthy. At four months, a naturopath reading her adrenal function found it one third of the way up the chart, in the proper pattern, after more than a year of flat results. By eight or nine months she says every symptom on her list had resolved. She offers this as the sequence that made her extremely curious about the benefits of minerals.
Where the Minerals Come From
BEAM Minerals, which Alan co-founded with Dan Howard, is built on humic and fulvic molecules, the substances left when plants decompose. She traces the company’s source material to ancient rainforests, describing a planet 65 million years ago covered in forest as far north as Canada until a meteor strike near the Yucatan killed most life and left enormous deposits of decayed plant matter. Related materials turn up worldwide, including shilajit in the Himalayas, peat in the British Isles, and leonardite or humate in North America. BEAM uses humate, a black crystalline substance she calls extraordinarily mineral rich, extracts the humic and fulvic molecules, and suspends them in a liquid that looks like cola and tastes like water. She says the molecules arrive ionized and ready for absorption without digestion.
Why a Forest Is a Better Model Than a Car
Her central metaphor is that the body behaves more like a backyard garden than a vehicle, so topping off one mineral at a time cannot work the way filling a gas tank does. Alan says most mineral pills are made from rocks, shells, bones, or salts, and that about 90 percent of what people swallow leaves the body unused. She also argues that heavy doses of a single mineral can unsettle the gut, comparing it to dumping a wheelbarrow of magnesium on a forest floor, and she cites sodium and potassium imbalances and kidney stones among the risks of salt based electrolytes. David adds that concentrated calcium and iron carry cautions of their own. Her closing point is that balance counts as much as quantity, which is why she favors a full spectrum product over eighteen separate bottles.
