Why Most Mineral Supplements Don’t Work (and End Up in Your Cupboard)

Does the following sound familiar? You start taking a new supplement that’s meant to boost your wellbeing. You expect to feel a difference—but after a couple of weeks, you aren’t sure you do. Eventually, you forget about the supplement. It ends up with all the other bottles in the back of your cupboard, and you go on with your life. 


This is all too common in the supplement world. The truth is that most supplements—especially mineral supplements—don’t really work. Some are the wrong form, others are the wrong strength, and some don’t even contain what they list on the label. 


Supplements should make a difference you can feel. Let’s talk about why most mineral supplements fall short, and how you can choose a mineral formula that truly works.

Potency Matters with Mineral Supplements (More Isn’t Always Better!)


Let’s say you go to the doctor because you’ve been feeling fatigued. You do a blood test and find out you have low zinc. Fatigue is a common sign of zinc deficiency, and replenishing zinc should correct the problem. But how much should you take? 


You may assume that taking a large amount of zinc will fix an imbalance fastest. However, it turns out that’s not the case—and high-potency zinc may actually harm you more than it helps. 


Zinc is a trace mineral, which means you only need a small amount of it. The National Academy of Sciences recommends adults get 12 milligrams of zinc per day. [*

But if you go shopping for zinc right now, you’ll find zinc capsules as high as 100 milligrams—nearly 10 times the recommended daily intake. 


A lot of people might buy that zinc to correct a deficiency fast, but high-strength zinc leads to all kinds of problems. A review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition notes that consuming more than 50 milligrams of zinc per day can cause fatigue, digestive issues, nausea, and even vomiting. [*] The same review found that taking that much zinc also decreases your levels of other key minerals, like copper and iron. 


In most cases, you don’t want high-potency minerals. They may sound like a good idea if you have a mineral deficiency, but they usually create more problems than they solve. 


Many mineral supplements also have the opposite problem: they don’t contain enough minerals to make a difference in your well-being. 


Supplements are not regulated by the government, which means manufacturers don’t have to adhere to quality standards. They do have to provide accurate labels, listing their ingredients and the amount of each one. 


However, many supplement companies get around labeling requirements by listing a “proprietary blend” of ingredients. They’ll list the total amount of a blend of ingredients—for example, 300 milligrams per capsule—but they don’t have to report the quantity of each individual ingredient. 


So a proprietary blend may list 300 milligrams of zinc, magnesium, potassium, and filler, which looks pretty good at first glance. But to save money, the producer could only use 1 milligram each of zinc, magnesium, and potassium, with 297 milligrams of filler.


If you see the words “proprietary blend” on a supplement bottle, be careful. There’s a good chance the supplement isn’t as beneficial as it seems.

Single-Mineral Supplements Can Do More Harm Than Good

Minerals rarely work alone in your body. They typically function in pairs or trios, teaming up with other minerals to maintain balance in your system. 


As an example, zinc often works alongside copper and iron. The three influence one another’s absorption and use—when one goes up suddenly, the other two go down. 


That means if you start taking large amounts of zinc on its own, you’ll compromise your body’s ability to absorb copper. To quote a Health Professionals Fact Sheet from the National Institutes of Health: [*]


High dietary intakes of zinc can interfere with copper absorption, and excessive use of zinc supplements can lead to copper deficiency.


The same is true of zinc and iron. A 2002 study found that zinc and iron compete for absorption in your gut. When healthy women started taking a daily zinc supplement, they developed low iron status over time. [*]


Minerals work together, not alone. If you take a single mineral in isolation, especially in high amounts, there’s a good chance you’ll create deficiencies in other minerals. 


Single, high-potency minerals may make you feel better in the short-term, but over time they often cause more harm than good. 


A better approach is to gently increase multiple minerals at the same time. Gradual, broad-spectrum mineral replenishment gives your body a chance to replenish the minerals it needs, as well as their partner minerals. You’ll avoid creating new deficiencies, and your body will restore its mineral balance over time.

Many Mineral Supplements Have Poor Absorption


It’s also important to choose the right form of mineral. 


Many supplement companies choose cheap versions of minerals to save on manufacturing costs. The trouble is that low-cost minerals are often difficult to absorb, so you don’t really end up benefiting from them. 


Magnesium is a good example. Many companies sell proprietary blends of different forms of magnesium—often a mix of magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, and magnesium stearate. Because it’s listed as a blend, the manufacturer doesn’t have to tell you how much of each type is in the bottle. 


To save money, companies often load up on magnesium stearate. It’s the cheapest to produce, because it’s almost entirely unabsorbable—your body uses less than 2% of the magnesium it contains. [*


The other two forms of magnesium—oxide and citrate—absorb better but are more expensive. The manufacturer will use just enough to list them on the label, then fill the rest of the capsules with magnesium stearate. The result is a mineral supplement that makes the company more money, but doesn’t actually help you.

The quantities of each element in BEAM Minerals products are measured in “parts per million” (ppm), rather than the “milligrams” (mg). Here is the information which usually helps to understand the difference:

In comparing our products to other supplements, people want to know how much of an electrolyte is in our products (like potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium). Usually they are looking for an amount in milligrams (mg).

We have a hard time answering that question, because the electrolytes (and other elements) in BEAM Minerals products are measured in parts per million (ppm). So how can consumers compare?

The answer is a little complex, but here’s the high points.
